Introduction: Early ornaments which decorated evergreen trees in Germany were usually edible items like apples, gingerbread, and nuts. Also used were paper roses, tinsel, and candles. Glass ball ornaments were made by glassblowers in the 1800s and called "kugels" because they could not afford real apples.
