In September 2006, the Greensboro Public Library along with community partners, will lead Greensboro in the reading and discussion of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. This book was selected for the One City, One Book project because it is filled with hope and is appropriate for readers of all ages. The book is readily available in many different formats and languages.

Considered a world classic, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl is a book filled with the hope and longings of a typical teenage girl who faces extraordinary circumstances. The story is set in Nazi occupied Amsterdam during World War II, but its topics of racism and genocide, unfortunately, remain relevant to contemporary society.

Since many adults have already read this book, we will be inviting testimonials about what this book meant to them the first time they read it. To connect the themes of the book to contemporary issues, we will plan programs on topics such as anti-Semitism and genocide in the world today.

For six weeks, starting August 27, we will feature and affirm local Holocaust survivors, as well as veterans who liberated concentration camps. We will also use the book to underscore the value of writing as therapy, highlighting the benefits of journaling and diaries during times of stress and tragedy.

There will be many opportunities for people of all ages and walks of life to participate in this project. Events will include a film series, concerts, lectures and forums, plus hundreds of book discussions. Triad Stage will present a play based on Anne Frank’s diary during the first three weeks of September. In addition, both the Community Theatre and Touring Theater Ensemble will be offering theatrical productions on the theme.
