We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Deborah Barnes back to McGirt-Horton branch library for a discussion on hunger and food accessibility in North Carolina.
"Despite an economy rooted in Agriculture, North Carolina is the tenth hungriest state in the country while Guilford County is home to over 24 food deserts. Citizens who do not have access to grocery stores are forced to rely on fast food outlets, dollar stores, and gas stations to source their nutrition. Relying wholly on highly-processed industrialized foods can cause severe health impacts such as obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression and learning disabilities, which overwhelmingly impacts the life chances of those forced to consume this unhealthy fare."
