As an African American in state government, Howard Lee proposed a state-wide trail in 1977 and continues to be proactive about getting people outdoors. Lee and others will speak about the history and value of the Mountain to the Sea Trail and the role all North Carolinians, especially African Americans, have in supporting and using opportunities to explore the outdoors.
Lee, a former NC senator, has had a distinguished career in state politics and was the first African American to serve in the state cabinet. He was also the first elected African American mayor of a predominately white majority city, Chapel Hill. Lee has held many state offices including Senior Education Advisor, State Utilities Commission, and Secretary of Natural Resources and Community Development. He has helped shepherd NC through its transition to a dynamic, modern, and multi-cultural leader in the New South.
