The Greensboro Public Library and UNC-G's  Weatherspoon Art Museum is collaborating on a film series. It will compliment the museum's exhibt of Pan American Modernism: Avant-Garde Art in Latin America and the United States. The exhibit starts January 30, 2016 and ends May 1, 2016. The film series begins with 3 documentary shorts on three of the featured artists.

Ben Shahn: Passion for Justice
A young Jewish immigrant, Ben Shahn fearlessly recorded in paint and on film a broad swath of America's social landscape, from the Great Depression to the Civil Rights Movement. This film presents the biography of an artist who fused political awareness with modernism. (58 minutes)

The Art of Romare Bearden
Romare Bearden’s art captures the diversity and richness of his life. With roots in North Carolina, Bearden migrated north at an early age, living in industrial Pittsburgh, vibrant Harlem, and, later in his life, on the Caribbean island of St. Martin. These four locales and his memories of their people, music, colors, and stories form the basis of Bearden’s collages and paintings. (30 minutes)

Man Ray: Prophet of the Avant-Garde
This film covers the life and artwork of this innovative modern artist with both clips of interviews and archival footage of the times he lived in. Born in Brooklyn as Emanuel Radnitsky, he grew discouraged by the New York art world of the early 1900s, changed his name to Man Ray, and moved to Paris. He was embraced by the Dadaists, many of whom later became Surrealists. (60 minutes)
