Dawn shares the seven principles (nguzo saba) of Kwanzaa. The first candle lit is the black central candle: unity (umoja), red candle self-determination (kujichagulia), Green candle: collective work and responsibility (ujima), red candle cooperative economics (ujamaa), Green candle purpose (nia), red candle creativity (kuumba), and Green candle faith (imani).
