The African-American Black History Month 2021 theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity. Join us as we feature three authors with reflections on this theme.

Mary Dowdell was born in Brick NC and is the author of Brick to Brick: Building a Black Family in America. Mary tells the story of how her parents started at Brick as leaders of an American Missionary Association School, teaching African American families how to achieve educational and economic independence, while at the same time building their own family. The story highlights the challenges of leadership, the challenges of racism, and the challenges of economic development in rural Eastern North Carolina.

Mary is a graduate of Hampton University with a Master’s from Strayer University and a PhD in business administration/public administration. Mary is a career child and family social worker who has experience in both public welfare and private nonprofit child welfare administration. Her dissertation study focuses on North Carolina Child and Family Nonprofit Sustainability. She currently lives in Greensboro.
